Outlast is played from a first-person perspective. The game’s protagonist, unlike many protagonists of Survival Horror-themed games, is incapable of combat; Instead, the character is able to move, climb, or hide in places in his environment in order to avoid enemies. To navigate the environment, the character is able to climb high places, avoid obstacles, crawl, and slide in narrow spaces using parkour. The character’s resistance is limited and he can progressively recover from wounds if he remains still for a certain time, without being attacked. Originally the game’s makers had developed a female assistant to help Upshur in different situations but the idea was scrapped as the makers felt it would lessen the stress caused by the character’s inability to defend himself. In addition, the protagonist can survive dangerous situations by hiding inside lockers, under beds or by closing the doors of certain rooms.

Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy
Getting Over It focuses on a mute protagonist named Diogenes sitting in a cauldron with a Yosemite hammer, which he can use to hold objects in order to move. Using the mouse or trackpad, the player attempts to move the upper body and hammer to climb up a steep mountain. The game accepts control pads, but they make the game more difficult due to the inaccuracy of the joysticks. The game becomes more difficult as you progress up the mountain. There are no checkpoints, so the player is at constant risk of losing some or all of their progress. The game concludes when a player has reached the highest part of the map and enters outer space. Upon reaching the conclusion, a message asks players if they are recording the game. When a player indicates no, the game accesses a Chatroom of other players who have completed the game.
